spineless
as a matter of fact
they had removed it
through an incision
at the nape of her neck
right here
where the knobbly bone is
if you bend your neck down
you can feel the bone with your fingers
(my neck bends
my arm crooks
i place my hand
at the nape of my neck
moving my fingers
feeling the knobbly bone)
they told her
it was like pulling a carrot
up from the ground
she remembers hearing the soft smucking sound
as it plopped out
all one piece
and now her root was gone
that’s how she felt she said
of course we walked all over her
she just let us.
