perfect inertia
could have—did—
tumescent sludge
ambivalence
fussed like mould
over
the surface of things
a glass-eyed river
wide and opaque sorrel
seemingly shallow
submissive, innocuous
but as every life-guard knows
when it comes to water
even a bucket-full
is enough to drown in.
