my name

July 20, 2004

in the arts, and probably in other domains, name recognition counts. in the middle of a “career” you are not supposed to change your name, and if you do you will run into resistance, after all you are known as…. and not ….

so, this, changing of name, is what i did. it is not, however a drastic change, it is merely an adding of my middle name, elaine, to my first name karen. so now i am karen elaine spencer rather than karen spencer. there is a highly personal reason for this addition of my middle name that makes, for me, a distinction between the before and the after of the circumstances that brought forth a deep alteration in my life. the addition of elaine recalls for me this “event” and it is an event i do not want to ever grow indifferent to. this shift colours absolutely everything i now do.
