then involuntary breath holding

June 24, 2006

perfect inertia
could have—did—

tumescent sludge
ambivalence
fussed like mould

a glass-eyed river
wide and opaque sorrel
seemingly shallow
submissive, innocuous

but as every life-guard knows

when it comes to water
even a bucket-full
is enough to drown in.
