day 3

“niki pawaten etapwewakeyimiyin” is cree for “i dreamt you trusted me.”

i wrote the dream behind the casino close to a place called “the learning centre.” i was hoping someone would go by and recognize the cree language…if anyone did they kept quiet about it. as you can see in the photo the dark cloud gathered strength and opened into a thunder and lightening session about fifteen minutes later, meaning the dream was quickly washed away.

It is so great to see the writing in Cree. I am unable to read it, but I certainly appreciate this manifestation of your project. I am certain that many of the under-housed people around there would perhaps recognize the characters of the words, but might have lost the ability to read this – or may have never have been taught Cree.

    Thanks you

  2. my cree teacher, dorothy thunder, tells me that in alberta not very many first nations speak or are taught cree, but that this is changing. in saskachewan (where she is from) there is much more spoken cree. i think it is important to speak/write the language of the people you are trying to communicate with…but in this project the use of cree is a bit of a political statement. and also, i have the sensation of speaking over a great distance to the cree ancestors, those who lived through the shock of having their land and culture destroyed.
